How Does Osteopathic Medicine Work?

Everything in the human body is connected. Osteopathy is rooted in the understanding that the human body is not a collection of separate parts, but an intricate and dynamic functional unit, interrelated at all levels. When considering how to help you achieve optimal health, osteopathic practitioners consider both physical and emotional aspects of optimizing the body’s self-regulating, self-healing capabilities.

Osteopath practitioners draw on current medical and scientific knowledge to diagnose and use osteopathic manipulative treatment to treat areas of strain, stress, and dysfunction that may be hindering normal neural, vascular, and biomechanical functions.

Your osteopath practitioner may use massage, stretching, and manipulation to achieve the desired results. These results or goals may include increasing the mobility of the joints, decreasing muscular tension, increasing blood flow to a particular area or throughout the body, and encouraging the healing mechanisms of the body. The body is very capable of healing itself. Sometimes, it just needs a helping hand.

Benefits of Osteopathy at Intrinsi

Our therapy experience at Intrinsi is unique to most clinics in Calgary. Frustrated by the common business-centered approach to treatments where your therapist often juggles multiple patients, we ensure that all of our treatments are one-on-one for a client-centred approach to our practice.

  • Your therapist has more time to become familiar with your condition and complete a thorough assessment. You’ll never feel rushed through an appointment with your practitioner.
  • We schedule appointments thoughtfully to ensure that your therapist can focus on you and your case entirely for the appointment duration.
  • Get more time to practice functional movement with your therapist and get explanations for what is causing your discomfort. Improving your health knowledge helps you make better lifestyle decisions to prevent future injuries.
  • Your treatment plan will be shorter — we want to see you improve quickly. Our structure is not based on return visits, but on supporting you with effective treatments.
  • Your treatment plan may include co-treatment sessions with other therapists as part of your treatment plan to take advantage of our diverse skill set. We always aim to refer where and when we can and aren’t afraid to hand you over to another therapist if we believe their skills may be better suited to you and your situation.

What to Expect at Your First Osteopathic Appointment

If you are nervous about your first appointment, don’t panic. Nerves are normal. To help calm them, we have provided the following information regarding your first osteopath session. Please get familiar with our processes and our clinic before you arrive. We want to put your mind at ease right away!

At your first appointment, you will first undergo an initial consultation. The consultation includes an in-depth assessment of your medical history, current health concerns, and wellness goals.

After your questionnaire assessment, your osteopath will perform a physical examination involving gentle palpation to feel for areas of tension and pain. The physical examination may involve various tests to assess the health of your joints, muscles, and other tissues. The consultation will take up most of your first appointment time, and it’s important to determine a personalized treatment plan for you.

Your treatment plan may include manual therapy, diet recommendations, exercise prescriptions, and lifestyle changes. Your first treatment can be done during your osteopathic appointment if time allows. Depending on your condition or ailment, various follow-up appointments may be required. Again, this greatly varies depending on the client and their situation.

At the end of your first appointment, you and your osteopath will discuss your treatment plan and what the process is for moving forward.

The Differences Between Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, and Chiropractic Care?

Physiotherapy helps patients affected by acute injury, chronic illness, or disability through movement, exercises, manual therapy, ultrasound and electrotherapy, and lifestyle advice to manage pain and prevent deterioration of function from disease.

Most chiropractors focus their techniques on the biomechanics of the spine with slight adjustments to your bones and other joints, depending on your concern.

Meanwhile, an osteopath looks at the musculoskeletal system as a whole and makes recommendations from multiple angles with more muscle and soft tissue work related to your health concern. Osteopathic and chiropractic care share the same philosophy that spinal health is an integral part of your overall health and that by improving the central nervous system function, the body can better heal and support other bodily systems.
