What can Cause Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?
The most common cause of pelvic floor dysfunction in women is pregnancy and childbirth. The female body undergoes significant changes to accommodate the growing baby, and giving birth can considerably alter the strength and integrity of the pelvic muscles that can cause a host of issues.
Pelvic floor dysfunction doesn’t only happen to women as a result of pregnancy. Men and women can experience pelvic floor problems due to traumatic injury to the region, muscle overuse, surgery, advancing age, or as a result of obesity.
Some of the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction include:
- Unresolved lower back and hip pain
- Prolapse
- Pelvic pain
- Urinary incontinence
- Frequent urination
- Facilitating a healthy pregnancy and managing any prenatal discomfort
- Lower abdominal pain
- Painful periods
- Painful intercourse
- Constipation
*Please note that the cause for these conditions can be complex and often require a multifaceted treatment approach.
Reduce pelvic pain and get urinary incontinence treatment near you today by booking an appointment with one of our physiotherapists.
Why is Preventative Pelvic Health Physical Therapy Important?
It’s important to address symptoms before they develop into more chronic and persistent concerns. More pregnant women in Calgary are being referred to pelvic health physiotherapists by their doctors than ever before, as proper physical therapy for pelvic health muscles can help prevent and manage common pelvic health issues that arise during and after pregnancy.
Preventative measures also include addressing annoying symptoms that you may have been experiencing for years. Often these small inconveniences are a sign of a system that is not functioning at its best and can have implications for your health further down the road.

What can a Physiotherapist do for Pelvic Health That a Doctor Can’t?
Physiotherapists with specialized training in pelvic health are experienced at assessing and treating joints, soft tissue, and movement patterns that may be dysfunctional or contribute to symptoms in the low back, hips, or abdomen.
The focus of pelvic health physiotherapy is to understand the root causes of what brings you in and develop strategies to manage and recover from your symptoms. Physiotherapists trained in pelvic health work, hand in hand with your doctor, striving to improve your overall health through a combination of supportive strategies.
Pelvic dysfunctions don’t resolve themselves overnight. One-on-one physiotherapy treatments for pelvic floor dysfunctions walk you through retraining of the muscles in that region to rebuild strength.
At Intrinsi health, our pelvic floor therapy may include:
- Pelvic floor exercises
- Clinical pilates
- Techniques to alleviate pain
- Massage therapy by RMTs in Calgary
- Lifestyle guidance and education

Intrinsi Approach to Better Health
Our treatments are based on our individual client’s health and concerns, which is why you’ll find the Intrinsi clinic to have a relaxed environment — we don’t follow a rigid structure. As a collective of health care professionals consisting of an osteopath, a chiropractor, massage therapists, physiotherapists, and TCM, we believe in working together for a model care system that investigates the root of your ailment rather than treating the symptoms as they appear.
Our values include providing exceptional care, which is why we’ve invested in the equipment, the facility, and continued education in the health space to provide our patients with the care they deserve.
If you’re looking for a clinic that offers more than movement rehabilitation, we invite you to visit Intrinsi and experience a community that is passionate about living a healthier lifestyle.
What to Expect During Your Pelvic Floor Assessment
No one’s injury is the same, which is why we invite you in for an initial assessment where we listen to your concerns and ask you questions regarding your condition and general health.
We may conduct an internal examination of your pelvic floor muscles to test for strength, tone, and muscle activation patterns to examine the areas of concern regarding the function of these muscles. We may also use an ultrasound to examine your muscles and lower abdomen — we believe that a thorough assessment is key in creating an effective treatment plan that will get you the fastest results.
