What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a highly-effective treatment that we have added into our service options to help us maximize improvements by tapping into your body’s ability to heal itself. Shockwave therapy promotes regeneration and repair of soft-tissue which can really help tackle stubborn issues that have been hard to treat. The therapy creates shockwaves that travel to the injured muscle, tendon or ligament, and the force created stimulates the body’s healing process to occur.

Why consider shockwave?
Our treatment approach will alway focus on empowering you. We take the time you need to make sure you understand what’s going on with your body and what you can take control of to help with your wellness. Despite everyone’s best effort, sometimes injuries just linger or don’t fully recover from other treatments, and shockwave therapy can be that missing link to a treatment journey.
What do we use shockwave for?
There are lots of conditions that shockwave therapy can help us to treat and in our experience, we have found it to be a really useful addition to our care. Some of the conditions that we use it on are:
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Plantar fasciitis
- Hamstring and gluteal tendinopathy
- Shin splints
- Tennis and golfers elbow
- Chronic rotator cuff injuries.

What to expect from shockwave therapy?
If you and your therapist decide to include shockwave as part of your care plan, the actual shockwave part usually lasts about 5 minutes and will be just one piece of your treatment session. Like other treatments such as dry needling, shockwave therapy is causing inflammation in order to trigger your body’s healing response which can be uncomfortable, however this doesn’t last long and the intensity of the treatment can be adjusted to your tolerance.
It is important to know that best results usually require 3-5 sessions of shockwave therapy.
Put simply, there is extensive research to support shockwave therapy and we would not offer it if we didn’t truly believe it works!
Get in touch or talk to your therapist if you feel like this is something you are interested in exploring. Like all our treatment options, we’ll work with you to explore if shockwave therapy might be beneficial and appropriate to add into your treatment plan at Intrinsi.
